7 Huge Musical Mistakes To Avoid At Your Wedding

Picture
The music played at your wedding is one of the most important pieces of the night. It’s the catalyst that gets your guests energized and ready to party. The music choices on your wedding day should be well thought out, organized, and executed to perfection.

Whether you are booking a DJ or live band, or choosing to MC the wedding yourself, pay attention to these common wedding music mistakes. One mistake, and it could affect your entire night.

Skipping the Sound Check
Since music is such an important part of the night, it is imperative to make sure that everything is working properly. And more importantly, checking this task off your list before the night of the wedding. Equipment such as speakers, phones, and sound systems are prone to technical difficulties. If it is not handled properly, or there is no professional to help with the fix, a problem like this could take hours. When you’re hosting a night where every minute is critical and time slips away from you quickly, you won’t have a few hours to spare. Getting this task squared away will secure a night full of fun and great times.

Opting out of a DJ or Live Band
Yes, I might be biased but honestly it might initially feel like a good decision to provide your own music, especially if you have a tight budget. But if you choose to put together your own playlist from your phone, you’ll likely have to spend time sorting through radio versions of songs. Since a lot of streaming services default to the original, or dirty version, making a playlist compilation can become a very huge task. Don’t write off a DJ or Live band simply because you think it is not in your budget. You may be surprised by the research you do. Plus, if why pay more for linens and chair covers rather than quality entertainment.

Not Asking the Guests for Requests
Yes, the average new DJ makes a big deal about requests but really, that's their job. There is going to be songs in mind that you’ll want played at your wedding. And this should definitely be discussed between you and your entertainer beforehand. But you’ll also want to consider your guests requests as well. An easy way to quickly curate an entire playlist for the night is to ask each guest for one song request on your invitation. Gather the results and submit them to your DJ. They’ll take care of the rest.

Playing the Music Too Loud During Dinner
It’s common to think that music should only be played when it’s time to dance. But really, music should be played consistently throughout the night. It creates an even flow, and helps you transition from event to event throughout the course of the evening. Guests want music to listen to, even when they’re eating dinner. However, the music during the meal should be played at a reasonable, lower volume. It’s not common for everyone at the table to know each other, and they may want to strike up conversation. But if they are competing with blaring music, it could lead to an extremely awkward, otherwise silent, dinner.

Not Meeting the Entertainers Before the Big Day
This is especially notable if you’re choosing a live band. A recorded demo just isn’t the same as hearing them live. See if you can attend one of their performances to get a good idea of how they’ll sound on your wedding. If you’re going with the DJ option, organize a meeting for you all to sit down and chat together. Gauge whether he or she is good at commanding a crowd, if they’re open to requests, and if they have an outgoing personality. They are ultimately in charge of keeping the energy up during your night, and you’ll want an MC that you click with.

Forgetting About Sound Ordinance Laws
Not to be a stick-in-the-mud but this one is huge. If you don’t do your proper research, your music could get cut off as soon as the party gets going. If you’re planning on hosting a wedding that goes on until the wee hours of the morning, check with your venue about sound ordinance laws before booking. If they have a time restriction, or perhaps it’s near a lot of residential homes, it might not be the best fit. Plus, if you don’t do your proper research and are hosting your wedding in an outdoor area, you could get slapped with a hefty ticket.

Incorrectly Pacing the Music
This is also a hard achievement should you choose to go with your phone and a pre-made playlist. It has taken me years as DJ to perfect this so your not going to get it on your first try. Putting your playlist on shuffle makes it extremely difficult to pace the music correctly. Your night should be sprinkled with a good mix of slow, dances, and upbeat fun songs to rock out to. This is when a DJ would be especially helpful. It’s their job to ensure that the music is paced correctly and that everyone is having a good time.

3 Ways to Let Your Personality Shine in Your Engagement Photos

Picture
As you plan your wedding day, your engagement shoot is one of the most exciting milestones along the way! You get to spend a whole day celebrating your love — what’s better than that!?

Additionally, you’ll gain access to gorgeous photos that you can use for your save-the-dates, invitations, and wedding decor — not to mention social media. Naturally, you want those pictures to showcase your and your partner’s personalities. It is YOUR big day, after all. Your love story deserves to be in the spotlight!

Here are a few areas for you to get creative and design an engagement shoot that will capture your authentic selves for all to see.

Your AttireWhat’s an engagement shoot without a cute outfit or two? First off, speak to your photographer to see how many wardrobe changes they can accommodate in your allotted time. You’ll usually be able to fit in two to three outfits, so you can really let your fashionista out!

If you get to don a few outfits, focus on creating different looks with your partner. Perhaps you have your formal outfits, your casual outfits, and something right in the middle. If you only have time for one outfit, make it one that you feel 100% comfortable in — both physically and emotionally. Your authenticity shows through your smile, so you need to feel like yourself no matter what you wear!

Don’t forget about the accessories — add a splash of flavour with jewelry, scarves, sweaters, socks, and shoes. The possibilities are as endless as your love!

Your SettingChoosing a backdrop (or several) for your sweet engagement photos should be simple, but that’s not always the case. You could always go the easy way and pick a popular local attraction, like a botanical garden or state-of-the-art museum, to serve as your setting. Or, you could do an urban-style shoot and wander the streets of your city. Even still, you can find the smaller, hidden gem locales in your area — like a local park or riverside spot.

Whatever you choose, make sure it’s a place that feels meaningful to you and your partner. It could be the crest of your most-frequented weekend hike, the spot where you met or got engaged, or even just a destination you always wanted to visit. Take your pic(k)!

Not sure where to start? Consult with your photographer for ideas. They’ve shot couples and families all around your area, so they’ll surely have some great recommendations for you to consider!

Your “Props”We’re using the term “props” lightly here. From flying a rainbow, trans pride, pansexual pride or bi pride flag to inviting your beloved fur babies (or human babies!) into the picture, there are so many ways to make your engagement shoot your own.

Consider the elements that pop up in your love story: How did you two meet? What cemented your relationship? What are your similarities? Differences? At what point did you realize you were in love? How did you get engaged?

You get the gist. Maybe you met in the dugout for your local softball team or over old-fashioned at your favourite whiskey bar. Pick out the unique details that built your relationship and bring them to your shoot!

Remember: These are pictures that will last you a lifetime. You’ll want to look back on them in future years to see yourselves glowing in authentic beauty. The only way to guarantee that is to embrace your personalities and capture all that makes you two special!

4 Areas To Infuse Your Wedding Authenticity

Picture

Nobody likes a cookie-cutter wedding. After all, custom details that speak to a couple’s love are what makes a wedding wonderful! But, as a couple in the throes of planning, you might be wondering how you can design a wedding that is uniquely your own.

Rest assured, you don’t need to be a professional to build personalized elements throughout your wedding. (Although, the pros are certainly the ones to call on to execute!) Instead, all you need is a bit of creativity and a lot of inspiration from your one of-a-kind love story. Think about it: Nobody else shares your love story, so why shouldn’t your wedding be just as unique?

Consider adding extra-special touches to these four areas of your wedding to personalize your design and infuse your wedding with the elements that make YOUR relationship distinctly wonderful.

Welcome Area
Since the welcome area is typically the first stop for your guests, it’s the perfect place to set expectations for the festivities to come. Incorporate your wedding colour palette, framed photos, and other elements from your design scheme. But, don’t feel limited by wedding-only details! Don’t be afraid to bring in your prized jersey or a meaningful family heirloom that will put your love story on full display.

Bonus: You can repurpose your welcome area décor elsewhere after all of the guests have arrived. Move framed photos to the cocktail hour area, place floral arrangements around the reception space, and put up your fun memorabilia by the gift table, cake table, or other station at the reception.

Stationery + Signage
From ceremony programs and bar menus to directional signage, your wedding day will involve a fair amount of stationery and signage to let your guests know what to do and where to go. Bring some flavour to these elements with custom design!

A few fun considerations:
  • Get custom illustrations of yourselves done in advance to promote your signature cocktails.
  • Offer a mixture of pronoun pins so everyone can feel seen, accepted and celebrated.
  • Have some fun with directional signage by incorporating some cheeky jokes.
  •  Make your ceremony program an interactive experience with fun facts, icebreaker questions, and fill-in activities.
  • Turn your place settings into a scavenger hunt to encourage guests to mingle as they find their seats.
Hire a professional stationer to ensure all of these themed elements are consistent throughout your wedding space.

Place Settings
Most place settings include several different elements: chargers, china, flatware, glassware, linen napkins, seating cards, menus, and more. Of course, your place settings can include as much or as little as you want! Skip the china and let your caterers serve fully plated meals. Or, opt for table menus instead of individual menus.
You may also consider including a favour at each place setting instead of a favour table. Sweet treats and mints are always excellent choices but don’t be shy about incorporating a special token that captures your wedding theme.

Plant parents can put a mini succulent at each place, sports fanatics may give out custom designed wedding “trading cards,” or a spiritual couple might pick out crystals for each of their guests. Have some fun brainstorming ideas with your partner!

Food & Beverage Menu
There’s no denying that food and drink choices are among the most significant elements of a wedding guest’s experience. Get creative with your menus when speaking with your caterer. How can you incorporate your love story into the flavours of the day?

Excited to showcase your multicultural heritages? Request dishes that remind you (and your families) of your homelands, whether it’s Moroccan tagine, Salvadoran pupusas, Thai curries, or Nigerian Jollof.

Passionate about protecting the environment? Opt for a plant-based, farm-to-table spread that describes each ingredient’s source on the menu.

Want the food to capture your Southern roots? Go all-in with freshly smoked BBQ, sweet tea, and bourbon.

In terms of drinks, it’s best to choose signature cocktails that complement your food. For example, margaritas are ideal for Latin-inspired cuisine (extra points for a beach wedding!). On the other hand, mint juleps or mules may pair better with shellfish or a lavish charcuterie display.

When in doubt, look to your caterer for guidance and inspiration. They are the expert when it comes to food + beverage pairings, as well as blending certain flavour profiles to ensure your wedding menu is as delicious as it is unique.

While your wedding team is here to execute and bring your vision to life, it’s up to you and your partner to get creative and find ways to infuse your wedding day with personality. Pull out your drink of choice and spend some time brainstorming — you discover the best ideas when you’re having fun!

20 Mother-Son Dance Songs That Your Mom Will Love

Picture
The mother-son dance is a big  moment on your wedding night. It is a symbolic dance that is a groom’s opportunity to share with others just how much he loves his mom, and to thank her for everything that she’s given him. Choosing the right song is very important.
Need help finding that special mother-son wedding dance song? These meaningful tunes will have mom shedding happy (and sentimental) tears with each step.

2.)

What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong - This calming song will let you forget everything around you for just a minute.

7.)
Lean on Me - Bill Withers - Your mom has been there through all the hard times; let her know that you are there for her to.

8.)
Time After Time - Iron and Wine - a new take on a classic hit that is slowed down and perfect for the occasion.

9.)
Over the Rainbow - Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole - For a more light-hearted approach to this traditional dance.

10.)
Child of Mine - Carole King - King’s powerful lyrics won’t leave a dry eye in the house.

11.)
Just the Way You Are - Billy Joel - Because your mom always accepted you just the way you were.

12.)
Isn’t She Lovely - Stevie Wonder - An ode to the first woman in your life, as well as the newest addition

16.)
Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Always listen to what your mom has to say

Our Song - Ellie Goulding - The original certainly gets the job done, but something about this remake just hits harder

18.)
Days Like This  - Van Morrison

19.)  Unforgettable - Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole

20.) Home - Jack Johnson - For the sandal wearing, chill vibes, Jack Johnson lover

Who Is Responsible For Enforcing Safety Guidelines At Your Wedding?

Picture
There is absolutely no question that all business took a huge hit in 2020. One of the many industries severely impacted by the pandemic is the wedding industry. As COVID numbers increased, many Toronto couples were faced with a very difficult decision. To continue on with their wedding day as planned, host a compromised reception with only a few close friends and family, or to postpone their nuptials until large groups couple could gather again.
Although the end of the pandemic isn't here, it is luckily in sight, and there may be a day in the future when everyone is having a great time at large weddings without masks and hand sanitizer. Unfortunately, that time hasn’t come yet and we might be looking at another year or more of protection from disease.
That doesn’t mean that we can’t still celebrate love and the joining of two families. However,  it does mean that we should be taking extreme precautions in order to celebrate safely. It only takes one person to make everyone potentially unsafe. Regardless of the group that you fall into, there are guidelines to follow to guarantee that everyone is having fun and staying safe.

Wedding Planners

A huge part of a planner’s job is to stay informed and up to date on restrictions and guidelines. They are an excellent reference for getting current information and tips for what to expect on your wedding day. They keep informed and know standard procedures. It is in their best interest, from a liability standpoint.
Wedding Planners can also be used as guides to the guests on the day of your wedding. It’s important to have a someone in charge of maintaining covid standards, and a wedding planner is a perfect person to fill that role. Since it’s their job to ensure that your wedding day runs as smoothly as possible, they have a responsibility to make sure that each guest is following the policies put in place. And a good wedding planner won’t have any issue telling any guest to wear their mask whenever they aren't not eating.

The Wedding Couple

Communication is always key when it comes to having a COVID-friendly wedding. And since everyone is gathering to celebrate of the couple, they should be the ones regularly updating everyone on the policies put in place. It’s important to extensively communicate with your guests and vendors to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Also, if any guests or vendors are not willing to abide by the rules you have put in place, make it known that they will be removed from the event. This is to ensure everyone’s safety and to make sure that everyone can enjoy themselves. Do some research and ask questions of your vendors beforehand. Find out about their policies and views on the pandemic and make sure they perfectly align with yours. A disagreement with  what is acceptable is not worth the headache.

The Guests

Each and every guest is responsible for their personal safety at the wedding. If you’re a guest attending a wedding during COVID, it’s important to know exactly how to handle the protocols. Most times, clear instructions for the wedding day will be laid out on the couple’s wedding website or other communications. But if you’re ever unclear about COVID guidelines during the wedding, do not hesitate to send a message to the couple. Just like you have a duty to abide by the rules, they have a duty to keep their guests informed.
And most importantly, respect the decisions they make. Yes, it might not be fun dancing with a mask on, but if it’s what makes the couple comfortable enough to enjoy their wedding day, it is not something that should be up for debate.

At the end of the day, if you are ready to have your dream wedding, if you are willing to be flexible, and are ok with a unique but safe wedding day then make sure to limit your guest list, choose an outdoor venue, try to keep socially distanced from others as often as possible, and stock each table with hand sanitizer and masks. You can still have the wedding day of your dreams with proper planning.

Why Have A M.C. ?

Picture
Why Have an M.C. ?
Many of my couples chose to have a dedicated Master of Ceremonies rather than just have the D.J. . I like to let wedding couples know that although a family member or friend can do this it can be quite the job . Usually you would want your family to enjoy your day with you .

What does a M.C. do ?
The job of an M.C. touches on several different parts. A wedding M.C. is the coordinator of all the aspects of your event. If your timeline is a script the you could consider your M.C to be the stage manager of the evening.

Typically an M.C. :
1) Introduces themselves to the guests.
2) Invites the guest to be seated and educates everyone on House Rules set by the venue as well as the wedding couple.
3) Introduces the Sponsors , Parents , Wedding Party and the Wedding Couple.
4) Introduces Dances and Events ( First dance, Mother - Son dance , Father Daughter dance, Cake Cutting etc  )

5) Introduces wedding speeches
6) Closing remarks and thanking of the guests

In my planning/coordinating experience I like to suggest having a dedicated Master of Ceremonies to help the night transition smoothly. The wedding dj can focus on the music and the wedding M.C. can focus on engaging the guests . They are the ribbon that ties the whole reception together.

Mark & Jessica's Mississauga Micro Wedding

Of all the Mississauga wedding DJs Mark & Jessica chose us to DJ their unique Micro Wedding at Le Treport Banquet Hall in Mississauga. Due to restrictions Mark & Jessica chose to focus the day on their ceremony and nuptials exclusively. There were a few important family members that couldn't be in attendance. Zoom was used to give friends and family at home the opportunity to still be included in the special day. Le Treport provided their lovely chapel which was the elegant backdrop to the ceremony. The officiant Robb McDonald kept the intimate ceremony light, fun and personable. The one thing that made this wedding so memorable was the roses dedication that Mark & Jessica did for their grandmothers.

Mark & Jessica decided on these specific songs for the day:

Prelude Music Preferences
A Million Dreams - Benny Martin
Just the Way You Are -  Vitamin String Quartet
Rewrite the Stars - The Piano Guys
Baby I love your Way - Benny Martin

Wedding Party Processional
Stand By Me - Piano Wedding Version Benny Martin

Bride Processional
Concerning Hobbits (The Fellowship of the Rings)  - Vitamin String Quartet

Songs During Licence Signing & Interlude
Groovy Kind of Love - Phil Collins
It's You I Like - Mister Rogers

Recessional
Forever and ever, amen - Randy Travis

Again, it was an honour to be the one and only Mississauga Wedding DJ that Mark & Jessica trusted for their Micro Wedding. Thank You!

Text Requests

Picture
The corona virus pandemic has literally changed everyone’s lives. Weddings are no exception. At the time of this writing we are still limited to the number of guests allowed to gather and that includes wedding receptions. As DJs a major tool to maintain the flow of an event is requests. To protect all our guests and wedding couples we have added text requests. A text number will be visible on cards placed on the DJ table. This allows for safe social distancing while still interacting with guests. Simply text the number on display with your name and musical request. It as easy as that. If you can send a text then you can make a music request.

We are delighted to take music requests. Our policy on such requests are to try and play as many of them as possible provided such requests are danceable, popular, recognizable and appropriate for the guests at any function. Requests for music that is offensive to any guest, race, creed, religion or otherwise will NOT be played. The DJ reserves the right to disregard any request that does not meet this policy, or any selection that cannot be programmed properly into the music presentation of the evening regardless of who the requestor is. We will give your music requests priority wherever possible during the function.

They said NO DANCING, should I cancel my DJ

Picture
Some of the US States & Canadian Provinces have started to open and loosen restrictions after COVID-19. There have been directives regarding the number of people that can gather. There have also been rules regarding weddings & events. Some areas have contended that although weddings can continue, that there should be no dancing to make sure that we don't once again infect large groups. What if they say there is no dancing allowed for your wedding? Should you cancel your DJ/MC?

NO and here's why ...

Your DJ takes care of the music during your pre-ceremony, ceremony, cocktails & dinner. Ok, there's no dancing but the day will be lacking without the effects of music during all these parts of your big day. You most certainly want your friends and family to hear your vows during the ceremony. It would the DJ providing sound support & mics that makes sure that everyone feels included in the day.

The guests should be focused and in the moment. Your MC in turn will be in charge of managing all the events in your timeline, to make all announcements and introducing the speeches. There is nothing worse that being in a wedding and not knowing what is actually happening next.

If there is no dancing then of course dance floor lighting is not necessary but what about decor & uplighting? Uplighting with enhance and transform the plain walls in your venue to something that is unique to you and your partner.

Along with maintaining your timeline will be the particular parts that make it up. Those special moments that many of us love at weddings aren't the same without someone to announce and clarify exactly what is happening.

A DJ will be able to come up with fun activities to keep an otherwise drab event moving along.
An experienced DJ won't be thrown off if something isn't running on time in the kitchen. They will adlib and come up with something creative that will entertain guest while everything seamlessly falls back into place.

Top Questions to Ask a Wedding DJ

Picture
Top Questions to Ask a Wedding DJ

Do you offer a written contract?
All of the wedding disc jockeys you interview may not have the same standards of professionalism. A written, legal contract is one of the first indicators of whether a DJ is professional and reliable. Furthermore, a contract establishes the DJ’s obligation to the client and outlines what is required for the DJ’s success, by outlining his setup requirements and other factors related to his performance. For this reason, a written contract is absolutely essential and any DJ not using a written contract should not, in my opinion, be considered for a wedding reception.

Will you be the DJ at our wedding?
Often, the person you speak with is not the person who will be your DJ on your wedding day. This is a very common practice among large agencies. It is absolutely paramount that you have an opportunity to interview the DJ that you will be working with and determine whether you feel comfortable with them. You should also expect that the individual DJ’s name is specified on your contract – it is the only way you can be guaranteed his or her services at your wedding.

How long will you hold our date for us?
When you contact a professional disc jockey, they should be willing to hold your date for you for a reasonable amount of time in order to give you a chance to meet with them. They should also give you ample time after your meeting to make a decision and give you time to interview other DJs. Some DJs will use pressure sales tactics to “hard close” you at your meeting, offering a special sale that ends that day, or claiming that another couple is meeting with them for the same date – attempting to force you to make a decision on the spot. Any DJ that uses these types of tactics is unprofessional and is most likely doing so in order to keep you from meeting other DJs (whom they know you’ll like more than you like them). One week is a reasonable amount of time to expect your date to be held for you following an initial meeting.

Do you work exclusively for this company?
Most large agencies use independent DJ subcontractors to perform their events. Often, these DJs work for several agencies and also accept bookings directly. A disc jockey, or the agency through whom he is booked, should be able to explain the DJ’s obligation to that agency and what will happen if he leaves that agency. Other concerns if you choose a DJ who subcontracts for several agencies and books his own events include what will happen if he accidentally is double-booked for your wedding date, and what will happen to your event if you contract the DJ through an agency and he decides to skip out on your event to book something else for a higher price. To find out whether your DJ is available independently or through numerous agencies, you may want to perform a web search for their name and the word "DJ".

How long have you been a DJ and how many weddings have you done?
A wedding is such an important occasion, and you should only trust an experienced disc jockey to provide entertainment at a wedding. The number of years someone has been a DJ will give you some indication of their experience level, but some DJs only perform for a few events (and fewer weddings) each year. A DJ with half as many years in the industry may have many times as many weddings under his belt, so you should ask how many weddings the DJ has done.

How many weddings do you do each year?
Just like any other profession, performing for weddings requires one’s skills to be in top form. If a DJ performs for only a few weddings per year, they may not be “at the top of their game” by the time your wedding comes. Asking how many weddings they do per year will give you an indication of their level of commitment to your type of event.

How many other types of events do you do per year?
Different DJs focus on different types of events – some consider themselves a “jack of all trades” and claim expertise in all types of events, and others are specialists. The ratio between the number of weddings a DJ performs for and the amount of other, non-wedding events they do will tell you where their focus lies. If you are looking for a “low-key” wedding DJ and someone you meet with does mostly Bar Mitzvahs, they may not be very focused on weddings.

Do you perform for more than one event in a day?
Some DJs will do as many events as they possibly can, and often try to pack their weekends with all types of DJ work. If a disc jockey has already done an event in the afternoon before your wedding, they may be physically exhausted by the latter half of your wedding, which is when they need to be the most alert and active. This is most common at agencies, where “weekend warriors” may perform at four to six events over a three-day period. I find it hard to believe that any DJ could give that many couples an adequate amount of attention leading up to, and on, their wedding day.

What makes you different from your competitors?
Any professional wedding disc jockey will take pride in their work, and be able to answer this question honestly and communicate the things that make their services unique. Some DJs, however, will take this opportunity to “bash” their competition and say negative things about specific DJs or agencies. I consider this type of behaviour unprofessional (in fact, doing this is strictly forbidden for members of the American Disc Jockey Association), and is a poor reflection on them. In fact, you may want to consider making it a point to meet any DJ that they say something bad about – DJs that engage in this type of thing will often target the DJs they know you’ll book instead of them, and they’re probably right!

Have you played at our reception site before?
Wedding experience is important, and so is familiarity with your reception site. Every site poses different challenges – different load-in and security procedures, different room sizes and configurations, even antiquated electrical outlets that need to be grounded manually. Hiring a DJ that is familiar with your site will give you peace of mind that you won’t have any surprises on your wedding day. Obviously, even the best DJs can’t have performed at every site in the area (since there are hundreds available), but if he hasn’t been to yours, he should be more than willing to adequately prepare himself prior to your event by visiting the venue and/or speaking with the site contact and studying a floor plan.

Do you act as the “MC” and make all of the announcements?
Any wedding disc jockey should be comfortable with making announcements and serving as the MC for the wedding. Some DJs, however, are not comfortable with this and prefer to pass these duties on to someone else, such as a site manager, who may not have a professional voice or experience speaking on a microphone.

How would you define your "style" when making announcements?
This is an extremely important question to ask because it will tell you whether or not the DJ is the right match for your guests and the atmosphere you’re trying to create. If you are planning an elegant, understated wedding, then utilizing the services of a “party motivator” or “entertainer DJ” may not be what you are looking for. If you know your guests will need a lot of encouragement to dance, then hiring someone who flatly refuses to make announcements probably isn’t the best idea either.

What do you do to motivate the crowd if nobody is dancing?
Different wedding disc jockeys handle this situation in very different ways – some opt to use the microphone to try to “energize” your guests and motivate them to dance. Others would never do something like this and prefer to use careful song selection to ensure dance floor success. You need to know what the DJ would do in this situation, and determine if that is the way you would like the situation handled.

What if something happens to you and you can’t make it to the wedding?
Despite meticulous planning and preparation, accidents do happen. If the DJ is injured or otherwise unable to perform on your wedding day, what is the backup plan? Most responsible professionals have a carefully planned backup strategy should this situation ever arise, but others do not. Often, DJs will be members of a local DJ association, and network with other DJs who would be able to provide backup services for them in the event of an emergency. You need to feel comfortable that you will still have a DJ on your wedding day, regardless of the circumstances.

Will we meet again before the wedding?
Just as some deejays will prefer not to meet you when you book them, others will prefer to conduct a “final meeting” in the weeks before your wedding over the telephone instead of in person. While having a face-to-face meeting for the final meeting is arguably less important than meeting personally for an initial interview, the DJ should still offer to meet you in person for a second time.

Can we visit you at a performance?
Hopefully the answer to this question is “no.” I’m sure that you wouldn’t appreciate the DJ inviting prospective clients to your wedding to see him in action. A professional DJ should be willing to take a stand for his clients’ privacy and not offer this as a possibility.

May we speak to your references?
Speaking to a wedding DJ’s former clients is a great way to get a feel for what it is like to work with them, and any DJ should be ready and willing to allow you to speak with their references. He should also be willing to contact several of these references in advance of providing you with their information, so that they have his permission and so you feel comfortable with calling them.

How do you keep your music collection up-to-date?
The majority of professional DJs subscribe to at least one of the major music update services in order to keep their collections up-to-date. These services provide the DJ with new, radio edited music, often before it is even playing on the radio. Ask the DJ if they subscribe to any of these. The most common are TM Century Prime Cuts, RPM, Promo Only, and ERG NuTraxx.

How involved can we be in selecting music for our event?
This is an important question to ask, because some DJs prefer to control the majority of the playlist and supplement their choices with a handful of your specific requests. Other disc jockeys prefer to let the client choose the majority of the music, and then use their expertise to make it all work. The DJ should be accommodating of your music tastes, and you should feel comfortable with the DJ's approach and the amount of involvement you'll be able to have in choosing the music.

When do we need to submit our music requests and event details?
Most professional DJs will give you a printed song list and planning worksheet with which to communicate the details of your event; others will give you access to an online planning system that will guide you throughout the entire process. You should be given ample time to make decisions regarding your music choices and event timeline, but the DJ should also require this information far enough in advance so that he can adequately prepare for your event. A DJ who doesn’t ask for your requests at least a couple of weeks before your wedding may not be able to fulfill them. In addition, the DJ should be willing to accommodate any later changes or additions whenever possible, rather than locking you into a first dance song that you later regret or refusing to alter the order of your toasts.

Do you take requests from our guests?
Most DJs are happy to do so, but you should also feel reasonably assured that any request they chose to play would not be something you didn’t like.

Can we submit a “Do Not Play” list?
Any professional DJ should be willing to honour your requests, including your request for certain songs and genres to not be used. Submitting a “Do Not Play” list will give a DJ a clear idea of your limits and your expectations for their song selection at your wedding.

When do you arrive to set up for our wedding?
When dealing with sub-standard DJs, there are often issues with them being punctual and set up well in advance of your guests’ arrival. Professional DJs will always arrive at least a full hour before their scheduled start time in order to have adequate time to set up and get organized before the wedding.

What will you wear to our wedding?
Most wedding DJs own, and are comfortable wearing, a suit when they perform. If the groom will not be wearing a tuxedo, then it is inappropriate for the DJ (or any of the staff) to wear a tuxedo. You should also ask what type of tuxedo the DJ wears. Brands are typically unimportant (most tuxes look practically identical), but ask about the style of vest, cummerbund, and neckwear. Some DJs prefer a classic, understated look and others wear flashy, shimmering or patterned vests and matching bowties. It is important that the DJ’s “look” meets your expectations.

What will you wear when you set up and break down your equipment?
This is something that is often overlooked, but can make a big difference. If your guests arrive early for the reception or stay afterward, will they see the DJ in a sweaty undershirt and gym
shorts? Professional disc jockeys maintain acceptable appearance standards regardless of the situation, including setting up and breaking down their equipment.

How much of a deposit is required to secure our date?
Almost every DJ will require some sort of deposit or retainer in order to secure your date. This is for their protection and yours. The industry standard for deposits is 50%. Some DJs require far less, but this is not always a good idea. If the contract language doesn’t stipulate a specific guarantee of services and clearly outline a cancellation policy, the DJ may only legally be responsible for returning your deposit (sometimes as little as $25) in order to back out of doing your wedding. While it would certainly be considered unprofessional, there certainly isn’t any financial repercussion to the DJ if he’s only forced to pay $25 for backing out on you.

What is included in the cost of my event?
DJs use vastly different systems when pricing their services. Most DJs price their services a la carte, charging an hourly rate and adding charges for any additional equipment needed. Others choose to use a flat-rate pricing system and make their packages all-inclusive. You need to be clear about what a DJ is offering for the price they’ve quoted you, so you can compare their package to those of the other DJs you are interviewing.

How much would you charge for overtime?
Hopefully your DJ will do such a wonderful job at your wedding that you’d like to keep dancing! Be sure that the DJ’s contract outlines a specific rate for additional time at the end of the night, whether it is a set price or a pro-rated amount based on the original price.

What do you require from us?
Every DJ will require a few things that you’ll need to provide them in order to be successful. The most common are adequate shelter, electricity, and a table for their equipment. Make sure that you understand exactly what the DJ needs from you so you can communicate those needs to your reception site and caterer.

Do you require a meal?
Some DJs require that they receive a meal at the wedding, and some even demand that they be fed the same food as your guests. Others do not require a meal at all, or simply accept one if you happen to offer. Again, be sure you know what the DJ’s requirements are so you can plan accordingly.

Are you insured?
It is absolutely essential that any DJ you consider carries a full liability insurance policy. They are fairly inexpensive, so being uninsured is inexcusable. Some reception sites have even taken the step of requiring all vendors working at their facility to provide proof of insurance before the
wedding. Liability insurance protects you and the reception site in the unlikely event that your DJ injures one of your guests or burns your reception site to the ground.

Do you take any breaks?
One of the major advantages to using a DJ instead of a band is that a DJ does not need to take breaks, outside of using the restroom and possibly eating a meal quickly in another room (if this is what your site contact or caterer requires). In any case, the DJ should assure you that there will be no break in the music at any point during the reception.

What is your policy on alcohol or smoking during the wedding?
A professional DJ will never consume alcohol or take cigarette breaks during your wedding. If you interview a DJ and he tells you he needs a few drinks to “loosen up” while working, you should probably look for a DJ with higher standards of professionalism.

What kind of equipment do you use?
Any DJ you consider should be proud of his sound system, and should be using professional- grade equipment. Ask the DJ to describe his sound system to you. You should not hear very many “home audio” brands in what he describes – the top brands for DJ equipment are Pioneer, Denon, Visiosonic PCDJ, Serato, Electro-Voice (EV), JBL, Mackie, RANE, QSC, and Shure.

Do you bring backup equipment with you to the wedding?
Even the very best and most well-maintained equipment will malfunction at some point. Your DJ needs to be prepared in case this happens at your wedding. The only way you will not suffer a setback on your special day is if the DJ brings a full second sound system with them to each and every wedding. Having backup equipment in a warehouse 50 miles from your reception site won’t do much good if there is no music at your wedding for an hour.

Do you have a wireless microphone?
Every professional wedding DJ should offer a wireless microphone to be used for your guests’ toasts, blessing, and any other speeches that need to be made. The industry standard for wireless microphones is Shure, and most professional DJs use Shure wireless technology.

Do you have a “light show”?
Some DJs also offer “party lights,” either as part of their package or as an additional service they can provide. You should find out whether the DJ plans on setting up lights for the dance floor, and whether this matches your preferences. Also, if you do desire a light show, you may want to ask how this will affect the aesthetics of your reception (in other words, how bulky/cumbersome the setup is) and the quality of your photographs or video. In my experience, most weddings do not need (and practically none of my clients even ask for) a light show.

Do you set up a sign or banner with your equipment?
Shameless self-promotion sometimes rears its ugly head at wedding receptions in the form of a sign or banner advertising the DJ’s company name and contact information. These items inevitably find their way into your wedding pictures and video, and ruin what is an otherwise commercial-free event. I personally find this practice repulsive and completely unprofessional, and believe that any DJ that does this should never be hired for a wedding.

Do you belong to any professional associations or trade groups?
If a DJ is serious about his craft and interested in becoming a better performer, they will often join a local DJ association or trade group. These are great opportunities for DJs to interact with one another, share ideas, and network with other DJs who might be able to help them should they ever have an emergency. While membership in one of these organizations is not a guarantee of that DJ’s talent level, it does show a willingness to grow and improve and become a better DJ.

You've decided to postpone your wedding. What's next?

Picture
Once you have decided to move your wedding you need to also decide whether to postpone or to cancel.  Here at DJ XTC Entertainment we recommend that you postpone your event rather than cancel.  The main reasons we suggest postponement are firstly you have spent so much time time planning and organizing your celebration. You don't want all of that work to go to waste. Secondly when you cancel service, many vendors and venues will institute cancelation fees. Avoid paying more than necessary.  When postponing with us, we will not charge you any other rebooking fees. We can move your retainer to another available date within a 12 month period.

Once you make the decision to postpone your wedding, your next step is to contact ALL of your vendors to come up with a new date to have your wedding.  We have seen couples in the past who made the mistake of only contacting their venue and booking a new date with them and not being able to rebook the other vendors. Avoid running the risk of having to find all new entertainment, caterers, photographers, etc. after you’ve already spent so much time choosing the ones that fit you best.

Our suggestion would be to find 3 or 4 dates that are available with your venue and then contact your other vendors one at a time. Talk to all of your vendors, then find a date they are all available, and then re-schedule. Communication is key here.

The Biggest Trends In 2020 Weddings

Picture
January marked the beginning of a new year, new decade, and new style of wedding. And we’ve never been more excited! As couples begin planning their perfect day and peak wedding season quickly approaches there are a few trends that we can be sure to see in 2020.
Showing off the bridal party’s unique style and personality. Gone are the days of girls in matching, ill-fitting dresses that scream “BRIDESMAID.” We’re seeing a new wave of unique and personalized styles that give your bridesmaids the chance to feel comfortable, and look beautiful. These are the girls you love the most! Each of them is different, so let their dresses represent that! Our personal favorite for spring and summer weddings is an all white bridal party! Which also looks amazing for our second trend of 2020… bright, beautiful and locally grown flowers!
The whimsical bouquet has become the norm for weddings over the past couple years. But the movement has shifted from a soft, muted, blush and cream palate and we’re now seeing bright beautiful blooms filling the bouquets of our 2020 brides! Whether you choose flowers that are meaningful to your relationship, spark memories of summers spent outdoors, or just love the pop of colour, these arrangements are sure to bring excitement and splendour to your perfect day!

Locally sourced and sustainable options. Along with the bright floral arrangements we’re also seeing couples opt for locally grown and in season flowers! What a beautiful testament for the love of the area you’ve chosen for your wedding. Flowers aren’t the only locally sourced options to enjoy. Farm to table food makes for a fresh, delicious and memorable menu that your guests are sure to enjoy! Favours (and flavours) from the local area- apples, peaches, homemade jams, or soaps made at a local farm are all wonderful favours that your guests will actually enjoy! They add a special touch to your wedding and are a beautiful way to say thank you to guests and pay homage to resources in your area.
Incorporate meaningful and fun aspects into your wedding! It can be a favourite song while you walk down the aisle, a special aspect in your ceremony, like taking communion, hand-fasting or having a guest read a beloved poem.  Pick a signature drink for cocktail hour, or sneak in your favourite hors d’oeuvres. During the reception, invite guests to join you in a fun dance, or pass your rings around and ask for blessings from your guests. Remember, this day is about you as a couple! Invite the people you love the most, and enjoy those precious moments as they come to celebrate and support you as you begin your life together as Mr. and Mrs.
Most importantly, your wedding day should be your own! Often times brides get bogged down with feeling like they need to check every box on the traditional list of wedding to-dos. Or worse, they need to please or change their dream to fulfill the desires of loved ones and friends. Please don’t! Your wedding day is meant for celebrating the beautiful love between you and your partner! Out of everyone in the entire universe, you found each other! You’ve spent time growing, learning and falling deeply in love with one another! Your relationship is unique, and precious and your wedding should be a radiant display of who you are and what your love means.

Wedding Processional

Picture
Understanding Your Wedding Processional Order

Planning for your wedding day means learning a lot about traditions and practices you may never have known before. One common question we get is what the proper processional order is for the ceremony. Let us start by saying, this can be impacted by several things like your religious affiliations and venue. It is best to talk with your venue or officiant prior to your wedding day.
Are you having a traditional or religious ceremony? If you are, each religion typically has its own unique guidelines. Plan on discussing this beforehand with your officiant to learn what your specific religious tradition is. Your officiant will be the expert on this, and they’ll also be able to help you customize it where you are able to.

For a Traditional (Christian) Wedding Ceremony
Grandparents: Traditionally, if you’re wanting to honor your grandparents they will enter first.
Groom’s Parents: It’s up to you if you want to honor the groom’s parents by having them walk down the aisle. They can be seated after all the guests and before the mother of the bride.
Mother of the Bride: The mother of the bride is the last person seated before the officiant, groom and best man take their places at the altar. She can walk alone or be escorted by her son, son-in-law or another relative. She is seated on the left side in the first row.
Officiant, Groom & Best Man: Enter the ceremony venue and stand at the altar.
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen: Walk down the aisle in pairs. You can also have them enter individually if you prefer.
Maid/Matron of Honor: Walks down the aisle alone.
The Ring Bearer(s) and Flower Girl(s): Your little ones can either walk together or the ring bearer can enter before the flower girl(s).
The Bride and Father of the Bride: The bride walks on her father’s right side, traditionally.
If you are not having a religious ceremony or are getting married at a non-church venue, feel free to take what you like and change what you don’t. Ultimately, your wedding day is up to you. In the end, you’re getting married and that is what matters the most.

Sangeet

Picture
One of our favourite events is the Sangeet. The word Sangeet means music and the night can be considered a “music night”. It is a celebration of the joining of not only the couple but also the joining of their families.  It it is usually held  a few days before the actual wedding. It could be hosted at the bride’s home or even a large hall.  It is a fun time of music, games, performances, singing and dancing.
If you are considering a Sangeet contact us with a call, text or WhatsApp 1.800.826.8014

Top Last Dance Songs

Picture
Many people don't realize that the last dance song can be as important any other song played during a reception. Some DJs would even say that it is more important. It is the final note in the symphony of music that is the reception. It is the bow that ties everything up.
I personally like to get all the guests on the dance floor with the wedding couple. Some crowds circle the couple, some find a partner of their own and some just raise a glass and sing along.
Here is a list of some of my favourite last dance songs. Let me know what you think. Are there any other songs that would be great send off songs for the newlyweds?
